Arts District Approved for Williamsburg, Virginia

by Deelyn Neilson

The plan is underway, to create an Arts District in the city of Williamsburg.  Approved in a 4-1 City Council vote, the district will be located in the area around Richmond Road and Lafayette Street.  The concept of the arts district allows for artists to live, work, and sell their pieces in one location.  Several tax incentives will be offered, to encourage the development of this area.  According to a recent article in The Virginia Gazette, seven prospects are already interested in locating an arts business within the district.

The map below gives a general overview of the area of the city involved.

Mid County Park (and Kidsburg) Getting Ready for a Facelift…

by Deelyn Neilson

Have you heard the buzz about the plans to renovate Mid County Park?  Kidsburg (located at Mid County Park) is one of Williamsburg’s most beloved play areas.  You would be hard pressed to find anyone with children under the age of 10 who has not visited this play area time and again.  Years of climbing and swinging and sliding by hundreds of thousands of children have taken their toll on the park.  The popularity of the park, coupled with the fact that it is made of wood has meant that maintaining the park has become expensive, and safety concerns have also been raised.  The county is taking a look at how they can make changes to the park.  Some ideas have included demolishing the park, and rebuilding it with longer lasting materials, a sprayground (where children can run through sprinklers), and some rearranging of the placement of the beach volleyball courts.  If you would like to weigh in on this matter, you are welcome to attend the upcoming master plan meetings.  The first is scheduled for 6:30pm on Wednesday, February 16th, and another on Tuesday, February 22 at 12:30pm.  Both meetings will be held at the James City - Williamsburg Community Center, located at 5301 Longhill Road.  If you cannot attend, there a variety of ways to share your vision: call the Master Plan Hotline at 259-4939, or e-mail parks.rec@james-city.va.us.
